STATEMENT FROM THE CAMPAIGN FOR NEW YORK'S FUTURE ON TODAY'S PLANYC DEVELOPMENTS
New York, June 7, 2007 - Michael O'Loughlin, Campaign Director for the Campaign for New York's Future, a coalition of 94 environmental, public health, civic, labor, community and business organizations from all fiveboroughs and the surrounding suburbs that formed to support Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC, today issued the following statement:
"This is a pivotal day in our drive to make New York City the greenest city in the nation. On behalf of the Campaign for New York's Future, I would like to thank United States Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and Governor Spitzer for their critical support of the congestion pricing component of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative.
"Our coalition agrees with Secretary Peters that the Mayor's congestionplan is bold, brave and long overdue, and we are gratified to learn that she has selected New York as a semi-finalist in the Department of Transportation's Urban Partnership Agreement, a grant program that could provide up to $500 million toward short-term transit improvements that would precede startup of a congestion pricing pilot program.
"We also applaud Governor Spitzer for his recognition of the plan's merits and for his assistance in helping ensure the proposal receives a thorough yet swift examination in Albany.
"We would also like to thank Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno as he prepares to introduce PlaNYC legislation in the State Senate. If enacted, this landmark Plan would produce better mass transit, cleaner air, make the economy stronger and reduce global warming. With Assembly hearings starting tomorrow and given recent PlaNYC endorsements by a wide range of legislators, there are daily signs of progress and unmistakable momentum gathering for the Mayor's ambitious yet crucial agenda."
